VITAL

Real-time, Cooperative Enterprises
1 Nov 2004– 31 Oct 2007

One of the most VITAL features of factories is their ability of
cooperation, quick responses to changes and disturbances. These are
matters of survival, independent of the size of the firms.
The goal of our project is to research and develop new methods for the
real-time management of complex technical and economical systems that
work in changing, uncertain environments. Since our methods come from
various, novel areas of informatics, operational research and knowledge
based systems, their integration will balance the aspects of
optimization, autonomy, and cooperation.
Our focus has been concentrated on customized mass production.

The topics of the project are sectioned as follows;

  • resource management and scheduling (B),
  • real-time production control with changes and disturbances (C),
  • cooperative production and logistic networks (A).

On each of the above fields, the work will be supported by basic
research to be published at international forums. The deliverables are
prototype systems developed by state-of-the-art techniques of applied
research. In order to provide tools that are profitable both for large
and small scale firms, some modules will be available in the form of an
e-service as well.
