Generic information
Description
Operations research is the theory and methodology of scientific approaches used for examining and solving problems arising in the analysis and development of the structure of complex systems, as well as in course of the organization and management of above systems. It is an interdisciplinary field where the frontiers of dif-ferent branches of science are connected, mainly via mathematical models, to different theories and methodologies of mathematics, algorithms for problem solving, and to computer science. Opera-tions research is applied science. One of its typical applications, in different fields of real life, com-prises supporting the process of managerial deci-sion making, and improving the operation of organ-izational systems. The management and decision problems arising in various relations are ap-proached by modelling, analyzing and optimizing them.
In operations research our main fields of research are global, linear and quadratic, and smooth optimiza-tion, while in decision systems, multiattribute group decision making problems are in the focus of our research.
Through real life applications, one of the tools we developed, within the frame of different projects, is WINGDSS. This software supports multiattribute group decision making, based on the decision making methodology developed by us, and has been applied in several decision support analysis and consultation projects.
In environmental decision making the analysis of the effects of different pollutants may be necessary. With this in view, we developed softwares for modelling the transmission of pollutants in the environ-ment: APT for modelling transmission of pollutants in the air, SWPT and GWPT for pollutants in surface and ground water, respectively.
In operations research, in course of several projects, we did the work of modelling and computing to elaborate some variants of optimal production and transportation plans.
