Description
The NSD's main field of operation is the security problems of computer systems connected via a network. Among these the most important is to study and to defend against the arising security problems of public networks, (like Internet) including defence against network intrusion and denial of service attacks, discovering of hazardous network attack points and the planning, developing and organizing of different types of defences.
Main activities of the department are:
- Incident handling within the confines of Hun-CERT.
- Consulting services in network security, security audit, evaluation or certification.
- Design and implementation of security systems, independent expert audit (also for juridical purposes).
- Writing white papers, essays, analysis, preparation and evaluation of proposals and tenders.
- Education and supervisory work in the field of network security, information security, and privacy.
- Development of network supervisory and traffic analyzing systems.
- Evaluation and development of RFID systems.
Hun-CERT (CERT organisation of members of the Council of Hungarian Internet Service Providers)
The NSD operates the Hun-CERT - founded in 1998 - to help, coordinate and organize - like other international CERTs - the information flow related to computer network attacks, the handling of concrete events, the ‘get in contact’ process among the different parties, communication and help in problems solving. Relevant documents about security questions and break-ins are available on the Web page of Hun-CERT [2]. The enquirers by phone or e-mail get help accessing information resources detailing the way of handling incidents, the attitude in case of incidents, the advised reactions and the descriptions of similar possible incidents.
Hun-CERT maintains close professional relationship with CERT-Hungary, operated by the Hungarian government. This cooperation includes regular information exchange and joint network security developments.
Evaluator and expert activity
The members of NSD are working in many different fields as evaluators or auditors for local authorities and for international invitations.
Educational and research activity
Members of NSD are holding seminars about network and information security, conduct supervisory work for graduate students in preparation of their diploma work.
The department participates in the development of network traffic analysing and tracking systems. These systems will produce pre-processed data, that can be further processed with data mining methods, and can yield final information about network traffic that can prove useful e.g. for intrusion detection.
RFID systems
One of the department’s activities is evaluation of the possibilities of the evolving RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) technology, R&D work in some special field of RFID. Special attention has been given to security aspects of RFID (data protection, privacy issues), security trends are being analysed.
