INVITATION

We are glad to invite science journalists of all countries in the world to attend the "Second World Conference of Science Journalists" (WCSJ) in Budapest, on 2 to 4 July, 1999.

The European Union of Science Journalists' Association (EUSJA) supported WCSJ a year ago under the proposal of the Hungarian Club of Science Journalists, and is proud that the WCSJ, with the sponsorship of UNESCO, has become an event associated with the UNESCO-ICSU World Conference on Science (Budapest, 26 June - 1 July, 1999).

The WCSJ is an outstanding initiative for many reasons.

Many problems are different, but one goal is common: social learning and critical reflection on institutions and procedures inherited from the past.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Host City
The Hungarian capital, Budapest, known as the „Pearl of the Danube”, is a bustling city of over two million inhabitants with vivid cultural life. Its architecture ranges from that left by the Romans to that of the present day. Structures of historic character standing on streets with a medieval atmosphere can be found as well as modern, well-planned, attractive housing estates and commercial buildings developed in harmony with the legacy of the past.

About Hungary
Those wishing to learn more about the host country can visit the Hungarian homepage on the Internet.

Entry Visa
Foreign visitors wishing to enter the Republic of Hungary should possess a valid passport. Visitors from most European and many overseas countries are not required visa. For information please visit the web site of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry or contact your local authorities. Should you need additional help, please contact the Conference Secretariat.

Special Price Air Tickets
MALÉV HUNGARIAN AIRLINES has been appointed the offical carrier for the World Conference on Science. WCSJ participants flying by Malév can also benefit from the special rates.

For this advantage, participants should contact their local Malév Office.

Two Meetings with One Travel
The World Conference of Science Journalists (WCSJ) will take place immediately after the World Conference on Science (WCS).
WCSJ participants registered by 31 May 1999 will have free access to WCS.

Bank, Currency, Credit Cards
The unit of currency is the Hungarian Forint (HUF), denoted as “Ft” in Hungary. Foreign bank notes and travellers' cheques can be converted into Hungarian Forint at most banks and hotels.

International credit cards (AmEx, EC/MC, Visa) can be used for payments in most hotels, restaurants and shops. Cash machines are also available at the Airport and all over the city.

Insurance
The organizers of The Second World Conference of Science Journalists do not provide insurance and do not take any responsibility for losses, accidents or illness that might occur during the Conference or in the course of travel to or from the meeting place. It is therefore the responsibility of participants to check with their insurance provider.

Arrival in Budapest - Airport & Railway Transfers to the City
Most visitors will arrive at the Budapest Ferihegy Airport. The simplest transportation to the conference hotels is via minibuses. This door-to-door Airport Minibus Service is reasonably priced (HUF 1.200, approx. USD 6) and is much more reliable than taxis.

A Railbus Service operates from the three major Railway Stations too, with approximately the same conditions as the Airport Minibus.

Weather
Hungary is in the temperate zone, the weather in July is usually nice and warm with possible showers. Daily temperatures usually range between 25oC and 30oC (77oF and 86oF), sometimes even higher, and the relative humidity is below 50%. However, the evenings may be cooler, so a light jacket/sweater is recommended.

Conference Venue
All sessions will be held in the brand new 'Informatics Building' of the Technical University of Budapest. The address is:

Budapest XI., Pázmány Péter sétány (promenade) 1/D. Phone: +361 463 1200.

How to Get to the Conference Site
The Conference venue is located along tram lines #4, #6 (stop "Goldmann György tér/square" at the Buda abutment of the Petőfi híd/bridge) or can be reached by bus #86 (stop "Karinthy Frigyes" or "Irinyi József utca/street ( ( walk or one stop with streetcar #6 or #4, resp., to "Goldmann György tér/square.).
