Most participants will arrive at the Budapest Ferihegy Airport. The simplest means of transportation to any place in Budapest is via minibuses. This door-to-door Airport Minibus Service is reasonably priced (approx. USD 6) and is much more reliable than taxis.

A Railbus Service operates from the three major railway stations, with approximately the same conditions as the Airport Minibus.

For maps and further information, please check our detailed arrival-guide.

VISAS

Visitors from European countries (except Albania, Belarus, Bosnia, Moldova, Russia and Turkey) are not required visas. Participants from a few overseas countries will need a visa (please check beforehand at http://www.mfa.gov.hu).

HOST CITY

The Hungarian capital, Budapest, known as the "Pearl of the Danube", is a bustling city in the heart of Europe, with over two million inhabitants. Its two halves are Buda and Pest. Buda, on the right bank of the Danube, has hills and valleys, and has for centuries been the administrative centre of the country; it was formerly the royal seat. On the left bank, Pest has grown into a large, busy and modern city, spreading out on to the plain.

For maps and further information about the city and hotels please check our detailed arrival-guide.

BANK, CURRENCY, CREDIT CARDS

The unit of currency is the Hungarian Forint (HUF), denoted as “Ft” by the Hungarians. As of mid-February 2002: USD 1 = HUF 275, see current exchange rates on the web: http://www.oanda.com/convert/classic

International credit cards (American Express, Eurocard/Mastercard, Visa) are accepted at most hotels, restaurants and shops. ATMs are available at the Airport and all over the city.

INSURANCE

The organizers do not accept responsibility for individual medical, travel or personal insurance and participants are strongly advised to take out their own insurance policies.

WEATHER

Hungary is in the temperate zone, the June weather is usually nice and warm. Daily temperature ranges from 20oC to 30oC (68F to 86F), and the relative humidity is below 50%. However, the evenings may be chilly so a light jacket/sweater is recommended. (See web page: http://www.met.hu/index.html for actual information.)

VOLTAGE

The electricity supply in Hungary is 230 V AC (50 Hz).

SHOPPING HOURS

Shopping hours are generally from 10.00 to 18.00 on weekdays, with shorter hours on Saturdays. Shops (except some megastores or little private shops in tourist centres) are closed on Sundays.
